Ti Rakau Maori Stick Game is a tradition from New Zealand
where players throw and catch wooden rods (rākau) in rhythmic patterns. Traditionally practiced by both men and women, the game was historically used by warriors to improve hand-eye coordination, focus, and speed. Today, it is commonly played in schools and community groups to celebrate Māori culture and practice te reo Māori through traditional songs and chants
How the Game is Played
- form two rows facing each other – sitting or standing
- tap the sticks on the ground or together to keep time with the rhythm
- on beats players pass or throw the sticks to a partner or neighbor
- the game speeds up, in some variations players are “out” if they drop a stick – until there is only one winner
Music and Waiata
Tī rākau is almost always accompanied by rhythmic chants or traditional songs called waiata.
